A final round up of 2020 news that hasn’t found its way to RISCOSitory before I was aiming to get this final round up of news posted on the last day of 2020, but as ever other things got in the way, so what was intended as the last post of 2020 has become the first post of 2021. Still, never mind, better late than never – which should probably be the official motto here in the RISCOSitory bunker!

RISCOSbits brings you an STD DOSE
Don’t worry, that doesn’t mean what you think! Read on… New from RISCOSbits is a new small-footprint Raspberry Pi 4-based system called the FOURtress – which, in an unusual move for the company, uses an off-the-shelf aluminium case, rather than something custom-designed. The case doubles up as a heatsink for the Pi, which allows the processor to be overclocked to 2.1GHz, yet remain cool.
A reminder about RISCOSitory’s mailing lists
Apparently, Yahoogroups mailing lists will be brought to a close in December and, if no further action is taken, that will mean the end of a number of mailing lists used to support (or allow discussion of) some RISC OS software. This would therefore be an ideal time to remind people that RISCOSitory is able to offer mailing lists on the .co.uk domain.
WinEd gets its first significant update in a decade
News that will be of particular interest to developers, popular template editor WinEd has been receiving some attention. The application was originally developed by Tony Houghton as a better solution for creating and editing template files than TemplEd, the application Acorn supplied for the task. After Tony stopped working on it, Adam Richardson maintained for a time, and his last release was in 2009. In the intervening period, with changes to RISC OS, it had started to fall behind, suffering problems on newer versions of the operating system.
Snippets – 10th July, 2020
While RISC OS may now be regarded as a small, niche operating system, with only a tiny fraction of the number of users that more mainstream platforms attract, it does still have a surprisingly vibrant community – so with that in mind, every once in a while I look through a selection of news groups, mailing lists, and forums, looking for announcements that haven’t found their way to me via the RISCOSitory news inbox, and from those compile a ‘snippets’ post. Hear about Euclid and more in a virtual visit to ROUGOL – 15th June
With the pandemic still an ongoing problem, though seemingly tailing off for now, and the UK lockdown still mostly in place, another RISC OS user group has opted to explore the use of Zoom to hold their meetings online: The RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will hold its first virtual meeting on Monday, 15th June. The guest speaker will be Tony Cheal, who wrote a number of RISC OS applications while he was the tea boy at Ace Computing.

It is with the greatest regret that I have to pass on some very sad news – the recent passing of Jim Nagel. Martin Wuerthner has been in contact with the family, and released the following statement on their behalf: “It is with great sadness that the family of Jim Nagel announces his passing peacefully on Saturday, March 21. Show report: London 2019
The 2019 RISC OS London Show took place on Saturday, 26th October – and once again (speaking as an exhibitor) seemed to be a buzzing, exciting show with plenty for the visitor to see and experience. It was the 11th London Show, with the first having taken place on 3rd October, 2009, and there was a good mix of exhibitors including large well known RISC OS names and smaller home-based operators. Show report: Wakefield 2019
Six months on from the show itself… that’s almost as long as the Long Gap between the Wakefield and London shows! Ahem. The place to be for discerning RISC OS users (and retro Acorn enthusiasts) on Saturday, 27th April, was Wakefield – more specifically, the Cedar Court Hotel in Calder Grove – because that was where the annual Wakefield Acorn and RISC OS Computer Show took place.
