Because while no news is good news, some news is better. Or something.

Keen eyed readers of RISCOSitory will no doubt have noticed that for the last couple of months they have in fact not been keen eyed readers of RISCOSitory at all. As is sometimes the case, the workload here at the Soft Rock Software office became somewhat hectic for a while – moreso, I think, than it’s ever been before – leaving no time for any updates to the site.

And to cap that, a nasty bout of flu has meant most of the Christmas holiday so far has been spent wrapped up in bed with either the TV on, or a good book open – but now I feel I can sit at the computer long enough to compile the news that has been missed into a final snippets post for 2014! Announcement from Gerald Fitton, 3rd February 2014

Colton Software and Abacus Training together with Stuart Swales, the former lead programmer of Colton Software, have decided that the time has come to make PipeDream and Fireworkz more widely available. Colton Software are the owners of PipeDream and Fireworkz; we at Abacus Training have the exclusive distribution rights for which we are now waiving our exclusivity. Of course copyright remains with Colton Software. Continue reading »

Well, there are always fireworks to mark the new year, so why not Fireworkz as well?

New Year’s Day 2014 saw Stuart Swales announce the release of the latest version of Fireworkz – v1.35/00 – for both RISC OS and Windows – with a long list of changes, some affecting the RISC OS version only, some the Windows version only, and some both.

Looking further, that list is even longer, if other updates since the last mention of Fireworkz on RISCOSitory are taken into account – the update to version 1.34/10 was reported on in March of this year (having been built in December 2012), and version 1.34/11 was released in May 2013. Dynamite!

Back in late 2011, RISC OS users saw the welcome return of Fireworkz and Fireworkz Pro, an integrated word processor, spreadsheet and – in the case of the Pro version – database package. The software, originally from Colton Software, had been resurrected by Stuart Swales, and has seen a number of releases since.

Fireworkz (and the file compatible Fireworkz for Windows) are now free to download from Gerald Fitton’s Abacus Training website, and are both now up to version 1.34/10. Updates to Fireworkz Pro, which remains commercial and is now sold by R-Comp, are sent out to users by email, and the latest version received at the RISCOSitory desk appears to be 1.34/9. Gerald Fitton of Abacus Training has announced via the Archive-on-Line mailing list that he has now received permission from Colton Software “to make a version of PipeDream 4.50/23 available as Freeware.”

In his message to the list, Gerald explains his long standing history with Colton Software and PipeDream, which started in (or around) 1988, soon after the Acorn Archimedes first appeared. Gerald and his wife, Jill, were “invited by Colton Software to create a support service for their newly developed, integrated word-processor spread-sheet Program called PipeDream” – which they did in the form of a floppy disk, produced on a quarterly basis, filled with articles, information and examples of PipeDream in use, called PipeLine.
