The Application Tutorial and Listings Book – a review

Richard Ashbery takes a look at the latest publication from Chris Dewhurst Towards the latter part of last year, Chris Dewhurst of Drag’n Drop fame published a new book for RISC OS users. Priced at £20.00 (plus £3.00 for postage and handling), the book is aimed at RISC OS users who are familiar with BBC BASIC and wish to write RISC OS desktop applications by learning to program the WIMP. The information and example programs are fully compliant with RISC OS 5 systems, and this brief review covers the first…

Snippets – 9th January, 2022

A roundup of 2021 news and releases not already covered on RISCOSitory With 2021 now behind us, the time has come for one final round up of news that hasn’t already found its way onto onto these pages – although this time, in fact, it’s the only round up of such news for 2021; for 2020, a snippets post appeared half way through the year and then another just after the year ended – but no earlier post has been compiled for 2021.

Midlands show returns as a virtual event

In recent months, particularly in announcements for their user group meetings, you may have seen references to a show to be organised in 2022 by the Midlands User Group – a resurrection of their old Midsummer MUG Show. The show page(s) on the group’s website were updated at the end of November with the show’s details…

RISCOSbits would like to welcome you to join them for Stonking Saturday!

If you’re a bit fed up with those pesky Overpuddlians bringing their practices and other atrocities over here, such as the increasingly common use of ‘invite’ as a noun, or annual sales events like ‘Black Friday’ (which tend to last longer than that one day) – and even worse, certain operating systems, when we have a rather nice (if slightly flawed) home grown one that runs on a family of processors which also began…

Hear about Euclid and more in a virtual visit to ROUGOL – 15th June

With the pandemic still an ongoing problem, though seemingly tailing off for now, and the UK lockdown still mostly in place, another RISC OS user group has opted to explore the use of Zoom to hold their meetings online: The RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will hold its first virtual meeting on Monday, 15th June. The guest speaker will be Tony Cheal, who wrote a number of RISC OS applications while he was the tea boy at Ace Computing.

Watching YouTube videos on RISC OS (updated)

While we all love RISC OS and its user interface, we all know that it is not an operating system without problems and deficiencies, because it simply hasn’t kept up with the main platforms in a number of areas – and one such area is access to online video streaming services such as YouTube. However, all is not lost – if you have a suitable computer, there is a software solution for viewing YouTube videos on RISC OS.
