Iris, the web browser in development at RISC OS Developments (ROD), has continued apace and the company has just announced an update, available to anyone who has previously supported the project through purchasing OBrowser, whether at shows or via !Store.
A new, small application is now available from RISC OS Developments (ROD) that sets up the system so that the Iris web browser can be run from your RAM disc.
Back in 2005, Simon Wilson – already well known for releasing driver software for a PCI TV card for use on the Iyonix, and responsible for Soundblaster drivers – released a 3D graphics driver for the computer, called IyonixMesa. With this installed, it became possible to make use of the 3D facilities provided by the graphics card used in the Iyonix, providing an OpenGL API. Released barely a week ago as a general spin off the software supplied with the 4té computer, intended for use by other people running RISC OS on the Raspberry Pi, an update to PiTools has been pushed out by R-Comp Interactive. The product, which began life as 4téTools on its namesake computer – itself based around the Raspberry Pi 4 – provides additional tools and configuration facilities to the computer in addition to those included in RISC OS itself.

As the countdown until this year’s Southwest Show ticks over into the final twenty four hours – the show takes place tomorrow, Saturday, 22nd February at the Arnos Manor Hotel in Bristol – a few press releases and announcements have found their way to me. I can’t spend any real time crafting individual articles this time around, so instead here’s a round-up of show-related news that has come my way since I posted a show preview.
It was the dawn of the third age of mankind second venue for the RISC OS Southwest Show Since its inception, each and every Southwest Show until this year’s had been held at the Webbington Hotel in Somerset – a grand total of twenty one shows, with twenty years between the first, which took place on 7th February, 1998, and last year’s event, which took place on 24th February, 2018.

The RISC OS friendly ISP needs the help of its RISC OS friends. At the start of last month, Orpheus Internet suffered an outage – on 1st July, the company’s servers became unreachable, apparently due to a network IP address issue. That day was a Sunday, of course – and Richard Brown reported on the company’s news page that “It would be nice if this can be rectified on Sunday but I doubt it. I would expect services to gradually resume during Monday and reach 100% Tuesday-Wednesday.”
