Meet the mini.m and see the si.zeRO in London on Monday

Both small, but still visible without the use of a magnifying glass! This year’s Wakefield show (report coming to be started soon at some point) saw the launch of a new computer from R-Comp, called the mini.m. The system is most easily described as a mini version of the ARMSX ARMX6, squeezed down so that it fits in a cube measuring just two inches in each dimension. But what if you weren’t at Wakefield, and want to see this computer with your own eyes? Your best bet is to hope…

Snippets – 14th August, 2018

A round-up of news items found anywhere but the RISCOSitory news submission address! With time rarely being on my side, I’m always glad when people who release software or other resources for RISC OS, or who do anything else relevant to the platform let me know about it by sending their news to the email address made available for the purpose. However, there are still plenty who don’t send me their announcements, and that is the purpose of these ‘Snippets’ posts – so what follows is the result of me…

Prophet rises again

While in the world of Windows there is a great deal of software for businesses to choose from to look after their accounts, the choices on RISC OS are very limited in comparison. In recent years, the choices have become even more limited as the operating system (and underlying hardware) has moved on, and older software has become unsupported and is no longer updated by the original developers. One such package, however, has been given a new lease of life – Prophet, originally written by Quentin Pain of Apricote Studios…

Dickie Brickie jumps from 8-bits to 32

A brand new version of an old game has made its way to !Store, where it can be downloaded free of charge, thanks to the efforts of Jeroen Vermeulen. Originally published as a type-in listing in volume 8, issue 1 of The Micro User, which hit newsagents’ shelves in 1990, Dickie Brickie was written by Mike Goldberg – one of six that he had published in the magazine. Twenty eight years on, Jeroen has released a RISC OS remake of the game, written using the AMCOG Development Kit by Tony…

Orpheus Internet is crowdfunding a DataCentre

The RISC OS friendly ISP needs the help of its RISC OS friends. At the start of last month, Orpheus Internet suffered an outage – on 1st July, the company’s servers became unreachable, apparently due to a network IP address issue. That day was a Sunday, of course – and Richard Brown reported on the company’s news page that “It would be nice if this can be rectified on Sunday but I doubt it. I would expect services to gradually resume during Monday and reach 100% Tuesday-Wednesday.”

Show report: Southwest 2018

Better late than never, but not as late as last year – so that’s something, right? This year’s Southwest Show took place on Saturday, 24th February, at the Webbington Hotel and Spa – the same venue at which it has been held every year since its inception. This year’s show was therefore the 21st, marking twenty years since the very first one, held in February 1998. There was therefore cake – which you missed out on if you didn’t come to the show, and which everyone who was present enjoyed.…

R-Comp’s mini.m now available

That’s apparently pronounced “minim” which means I can’t make any Mini Me references. Um… like that one. Shortly before this year’s Wakefield Show, R-Comp teased us with the news that they had a small surprise in store for visitors to the show, which visitors soon discovered was a new, small computer – the mini.m.  Based around the same processor as the ARMSX ARMX6, a quad-core Freescale i.MX6, the mini.m is for all intents and purposes a smaller version of the established machine – with some obvious differences due to its…

Font Directory Pro reaches into the clipboard

Allows text to be pasted into the viewer application. Elesar Ltd has just released an update to popular font management package Font Directory Pro. The package, which consists of a suite of applications to help manage large collections of fonts, was originally developed by LOOK Systems and is now being maintained by the same company that brought us the Titanium motherboard, amongst other things.
