R-Comp will and won’t be attending London 2021

Plans afoot for a pre-show live-stream Another company whose appearance at the London Show on 30th October will be impacted by the pandemic is R-Comp, with both Andrew Rawnsley and Steph in an at risk category, and therefore shielding – and of course the concern of not just picking up the virus themselves, but potentially passing it on to other show visitors. However, despite their own non-attendance in person, the company will still have a presence; a stand has been booked, and Richard Brown of Orpheus Internet (and Andrew’s co-conspirator…

PiTools updated to version 1.13

Released barely a week ago as a general spin off the software supplied with the 4té computer, intended for use by other people running RISC OS on the Raspberry Pi, an update to PiTools has been pushed out by R-Comp Interactive. The product, which began life as 4téTools on its namesake computer – itself based around the Raspberry Pi 4 – provides additional tools and configuration facilities to the computer in addition to those included in RISC OS itself.

Both R-Comp and RISC OS Developments to give talks to ROUGOL on 14th December

And Andrew Rawnsley will be doing an ‘AMA’ as well. What a bargain! The next RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) meeting will take place on 14th December, which is a week earlier than it normally would – the second Monday of the month rather than the usual third. This month there will be a talk on behalf of RISC OS Developments Ltd about some of their projects, given by Andrew Rawnsley, followed by a talk about the latest R-Comp products, given by (checks notes) Andrew Rawnsley. And following…

R-Comp’s 4té now shipping, with new additional software

The new 4té computer, first shown by R-Comp‘s Andrew Rawnsley at the recent virtual London Show, has now started shipping to customers that have already ordered them – and while R-Comp says it will take two to three weeks to fulfil those back orders, that does mean there is still time to order one if you want yours to arrive in time for Christmas.

Not a show report (honestly): London 2020

New hardware from R-Comp, and RISC OS 5.28 released! With the recent RISC OS London Show being a virtual one, taking place online via Zoom and streamed to YouTube, I decided in advance not to write a show report. Even now the event is over, it’s still possible for people to go back and watch those streams. However, there was some news that became evident as the day progressed, both within the various talks and in announcements put out to coincide with it, so it’s worth a brief look at…

News nybble: Fireworkz Pro price reduced until the end of September

It’s a show meeting discount! Stuart Swales will be the guest speaker for the RISC OS User Group of London’s next meeting, where he will be talking about his time at both Acorn and Colton Software. To coincide with the meeting, which takes place on Monday, 21st September via Zoom, the price of Fireworkz Pro has been reduced in price by roughly half until the end of this month. The application is an integrated office suite, consisting of word processor, spreadsheet, and database components. Originally developed and sold by Colton…

MusicMan and MusicCD updated

Updates for MusicMan and MusicCD are available from R-Comp. Both applications, now at version 2.22, have been updated to remain compatible with the latest versions of RISC OS, and have also been pointed in the direction of a new online database for audio CD look-ups; FreeDB, the service previously used, was recently closed. In addition, MusicCD has been moved onto the same 2.22 codebase as MusicMan, and has therefore gained some features from it – in particular the ability to lookup information online, such as cover art, artist or composer…

A brief look at RISC OS Direct

At the 2019 London Show, news broke of something to be called RISC OS Direct – a new distribution (distro) of the operating system, and an accompanying video series. The actual launch of RISC OS Direct happened in February, at the Southwest Show, so should be covered in the show report – but that report is currently still a work-in-progress, and is very late, so it seems eminently sensible to write a little something about RISC OS Direct separately.
