Developers’ fireside chat – 31st May

Anyone interesting in software development on or for (or even of) RISC OS is once again invited to get together online for another friendly fireside chat, with the next meeting scheduled for 7:30pm on Saturday, 31st May.

These semi-regular meetings take place online using the Zoom video conferencing platform, with the aim of providing people with a means to discuss the broad subject of RISC OS programming. As such, there is no set agenda, and the subjects discussed are instead determined by what participants bring up.

They offer an opportunity for newcomers to RISC OS programming to quiz those with more experience about how to best achieve some things, for help debugging problems, and so on – and to do so interactively. For example, in recent meetings there have been group efforts to resolve a difficulty with a Python program using TWimp, how best to handle different character sets, and so on – as well as sneaky demonstrations of in-development and not (yet) released software.

The meetings are open to anyone, regardless of their programming prowess – you could be someone with no programming experience looking for advice on where to begin and what tools to use, an expert with many years of development behind you, or anything between the two extremes; all are welcome.

To join the meeting, you will need a platform on which Zoom can be run, along with the meeting credentials. If you’ve joined a previous fireside chat, those credentials remain unchanged, but if not you can get them via one of these routes:

  • You can contact Andrew McCarthy on Twitter or Mastodon – or indeed from your RISC OS computer using ChatCube.
  • Or you can send an email to me here in the RISCOSitory bunker. Please note, though, that any emails sent to me on the day of the meeting itself will not receive a reply until very close to the meeting’s start time!
