With no London Show today, it’s a perfect time to remember Wakefield! This year’s Wakefield show was a slightly unusual one for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the show was held around a month later than usual, on 21st May, rather than its traditional April slot – although you could also argue that it had returned to its original traditional month; the show started out in May back in 1996.
This year’s Wakefield Bradford Wradfold Show – the first in person RISC OS Show in the North of England since the 2019 event in Wakefield, and the 25th physical show organised by the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC) – takes places this Saturday, 21st May.
30th October, 2021, marked the return to physical shows in the UK, when the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) hosted their customary October event at the St Giles Hotel in Feltham – the RISC OS London Show. Understandably under the circumstances, there were fewer exhibitors than in previous years, as well as few visitors; it was a much quieter show than usual – but despite that, it was still an excellent day for finding out what’s happening in the RISC OS world. Originally scheduled for their July meeting, which was cancelled due to circumstances outside of the group’s control1, Martin Avison will be the guest speaker for the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC) in August.
A new commercial offering from Thomas Milius is CaxDAV, which can be used to synchronise calendars and addresses between local clients and servers that support the CalDAV/CardDAV protocols.
And an updated list of alternative votes. The Awards poll for 2019 went live towards the end of March, with a deadline for votes pencilled in as the end of May. However, due to the disappointing number of votes received, I have decided to leave it open until the end of this month.
I don’t think anyone can possibly disagree with me when I say that 2020, so far, has been an unusual year. Most of the world is in some form of lockdown due to the SARS-CoV-2 (novel coronavirus) pandemic, with movements beyond our homes and interactions with people beyond our own households at a minimum – which means (in a RISC OS context) shows and user group meetings aren’t taking place.
The Awards poll for 2019 has been under way for about a month, and has so far received ninety form submissions – although that does include a number of blank entries1.
25th Wakefield Show now to take place 25 years on from the first, but… on the 24th. Following the postponement of the next Wakefield Show due to the ongoing crisis with the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 leading to the UK (along with other countries) being put in a state of lockdown, the organisers have now been able to secure a new date.
As the countdown until this year’s Southwest Show ticks over into the final twenty four hours – the show takes place tomorrow, Saturday, 22nd February at the Arnos Manor Hotel in Bristol – a few press releases and announcements have found their way to me. I can’t spend any real time crafting individual articles this time around, so instead here’s a round-up of show-related news that has come my way since I posted a show preview.
