Talk about leaving it until the last minute, that’s only 320 days away! EVERYBODY PANIC! Completing the trio of dates in 2017 for the main shows that take place in the United Kingdom, the date on which next year’s RISC OS London Show will be taking place has been announced as 28th, October, 2017. The St Giles Hotel, Feltham will once again be the venue, and while it may be a little too early to be absolutely certain who will be there (well, I will be – and you can…

News nybble: Weave updated (post, er, updated!)

That’ll be mark up creation all sewn up, then. Gavin Wraith has released a new version of Weave, an application that can generate web pages from scripts, and thus remove any need to understand either HTML or CSS. The script language used is a subset of Lua, so anyone who writes programs in that language will probably be at home writing Weave scripts – though a quick glance at the user guide suggests anyone who doesn’t probably won’t. However, for those who have the Archive Magazine CD/DVD including volume 15…

Wakefield group goes all festive on 7th December

7th December? But Christmas is still AGES away! The Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club – the Yorkshire-based user group after which WROCC syndrome is named1 – will be holding their December meeting on Wednesday 7th December; two days time as I type this. Being the last meeting before Christmas, it will be an evening of festive frivolity, with mince pies and other ‘seasonal nibbles’ available to eat, and rather than someone giving a talk on a RISC OS or other computer related topic, those attending will be subjected to a…

MiniTime gains access to bigger units of time

Micro moment monitor manages massive months! Once upon a time there was an application called SmallTime, which sprouted from the programming hands of James Freeman. That application, however, has never been updated to run on 32-bit hardware such as the Iyonix, let alone modern ARMv7-based platforms. Aemulor can save the day, but that’s hardly ideal, and the licence under which SmallTime was released meant newer versions updated by third parties couldn’t be distributed. Fred Graute therefore took SmallTime as his inspiration, and developed a completely new application that achieved the…

DPlngScan updated and unleashed

New maintainer, new home, new very low price! Those in the world of RISC OS who possess long memories will know that there was a time when if you wanted to connect a scanner to your Acorn computer (because this was at a time when Acorn were still around, and the only suppliers of computers that ran RISC OS), there was a very good chance you’d be buying the necessary software from David Pilling.

Show report: London 2016

Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor London? This year’s RISC OS London Show took place on 29th October, and while it wasn’t as large as last year’s event (which I’ll discuss near the end of this report) it was still an enjoyable and worthwhile one. So, without any further preamble, here is a run down of what visitors could have seen, working clockwise from the entrance.

“Black Friday? Pah!” says CJE Micro’s

Note, that was “Pah!” not “Bah!” – and there was no sign of a “Humbug!” Black Friday – the day following Thanksgiving in the Untidy States of Overpuddle, and which has become recognised as the first day of the Christmas shopping season on which many large retailers hold promotional sales – was yesterday. Well, mostly1. Today is therefore Random Colour Saturday.

Elesar brings Black Friday to RISC OS

Not to be confused with Black Thursday1. In the Untidy States of Overpuddle2, the fourth Thursday in November is Thanksgiving, a public holiday that dates back a few hundred years. Not dating back quite so far, and not an actual holiday, the day after this has become known as Black Friday, which is considered to be the first day of the Christmas shopping season, and most large retailers have promotional sales to celebrate it.

News nybble: ROUGOL meeting update

As well as covering sound synthesis, as previously announced, tonight’s ROUGOL meeting will also cover 3D graphics modelling and projection in BBC BASIC. This is presumably because the presentation is being given by Tony Bartram of AMCOG Games, who has over the last few years written a number of games – all in the language that has been supplied as standard with RISC OS since day one. The meeting takes place from 7:45pm tonight (2st November, 2016) at the Blue Eyed Maid (upstairs, in the restaurant), 173 Borough High Street,…
