RISC OS Southwest: One week to go!

That’s just seven days – so few you can count ’em on the fingers of, er, one and a bit hands! In a week’s time, a large contingent of the RISC OS community – hardware and software developers, businesses, hobbyist programmers and, of course, general users – will be converging on a hotel in a rather nice setting on the Mendip Hills for the first main event of the year: RISC OS Southwest, organised by R-Comp‘s Andrew Rawnsley and Orpheus Internet‘s Richard Brown. The hotel is, of course, the Webbington,…

“Black Friday? Pah!” says CJE Micro’s

Note, that was “Pah!” not “Bah!” – and there was no sign of a “Humbug!” Black Friday – the day following Thanksgiving in the Untidy States of Overpuddle, and which has become recognised as the first day of the Christmas shopping season on which many large retailers hold promotional sales – was yesterday. Well, mostly1. Today is therefore Random Colour Saturday.

News nybble: Shock news – CJE Micro’s out of stock!

But only of some items, silly! With the London Show looming, Chris Evans has made the shock revelation that CJE Micro’s has run out of stock… of some items! Chris says the company can recycle old Acorn and RISC OS gear “in the best possible way, by finding someone who wants to use them for their original purpose.” A full list of items wanted can be found on the CJE Micro’s website, and they expect to have “an estate car full of space available” for the trip to the show,…

CJE Micro’s/4D at Wakefield 2015

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…1 Emphasising their support of everything-Acorn and RISC OS going all the way back to the 8-bit hardware on which many of us cut our teeth, CJE Micro’s have made an announcement in the run up to the Wakefield Show (this Saturday, 25th April, 2015) that covers products for the BBC Micro, more recent (24 year old) A5000 computers, and brings us up to date with the new IGEPv5-based computer with no name.

Distribution of Baildon Electronics’ products moves to CJE Micro’s

There was an ARCIn, but was there an ARCOut, or an ARCShake-it-all-about? Amongst the various things sold and distributed by the late David Holden through APDL were the Acorn-related products of Baildon Electronics –  IDE interfaces, in the form of ARCIn. Following Dave’s unfortunate passing, Baildon’s Dave Hitchens has teamed up with CJE Micro’s/4D to ensure distribution of the range of the interfaces (including firmware updates) continues.

Disc duplicating software CloneDisc 1.01 now available

Dolly useful tool! Ben Avison of Piccolo Systems (and RISC OS Open Ltd) has released version 1.01 of CloneDisc, which he describes as “a general purpose tool for copying the entire contents of a disc,” and which “features full support for disc image files.” The software’s capabilities, explains Ben in his announcement at the beginning of August, fall into four major areas:

A celebration of the 30th anniversary of the BBC Micro

In a number of posts on RISCOSitory.com over the last year, I’ve mentioned that we were approaching the BBC Micro’s 30th birthday and linked to a single page website about it. It appears that more details have now appeared on another single page site, describing it as “an anniversary celebration of the BBC Micro and Computer Literacy Project.” The date set for the celebration is Sunday, 25th March, 2012, with the location given as – fittingly – Cambridge. There is a link to a contact form, and another to a…

A brief look at RISC OS Direct

At the 2019 London Show, news broke of something to be called RISC OS Direct – a new distribution (distro) of the operating system, and an accompanying video series. The actual launch of RISC OS Direct happened in February, at the Southwest Show, so should be covered in the show report – but that report is currently still a work-in-progress, and is very late, so it seems eminently sensible to write a little something about RISC OS Direct separately.
