News nybble: PiTools and 4téTools 1.21 released

R-Comp‘s support packages for the 4té and Raspberry Pi 4 (on which it is based) have both been updated, with the latest versions – 1.21 – both available to download. In the case of PiTools, that’ll be via !Store, and in the case of 4téTools, from the users’ download site, detailed in the machine’s support documentation. The reason for the update is that an issue cropped up with some of the LockScreen options, which have now been resolved.

Up periscope! Nemo to navigate Nautilus up the Thames

An obvious reference like that is impossible to resist – sorry! The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will take place on Monday, 20th March, and the guest speaker will be telling us how his submarine, Nautilus, is controlled via RISC OS. Wait, what? No, okay, then. The guest speaker will be Nemo20000, rather than Jules Verne’s fictional captain Nemo. ‘Our’ Nemo doesn’t have a submarine, but he does have some interesting RISC OS things to talk about.

MPdata+ 2.02 released

Kevin Wells has released an update to his political tool, MPdata+. The program allows you to access information found on the They Work For You website about your local MP. It does this by identifying your MP from your postcode – so you can use it to look up any MP if you know a postcode in their constituency.

3D Turbo Boost screeches into availability

HTTPServ 0.12 available… again. Sort of.

It’s not the same 0.12 that was available last year, honest! A new version of Thomas Milius’ freeware web server, HTTPServ is now available – with a version number confusingly reminiscent of the version released back in May 2022, though according to Thomas there’s a reason for that.

That’ll be in Wychbold, then!1 The Midlands User Group (MUG) will be meeting up in person this Saturday (4th March) for the first time since before the pandemic – meetings in the interim have all been held online – and the ‘main event’ of the meeting will be a demonstration of the Desktop Dock, for use with laptops such as the Pinebook Pro.

ScummVM 2.7.0 brings more new engines and games

A new version of ScummVM is out now, and brings with it new engines, and therefore even more games. The software is a ‘virtual machine’ designed originally to allow games developed with a specific system to be playable on modern computer system, but has gone on to support many more.

No, not that Fast Show. You’ll not find Rowley Birkin QC here! The RISC OS Southwest Show is so incredibly close now that the exhibitors are in the hall, teeth chattering and knees knocking at the prospect of the huge throngs of people that will be coming through the door in about half an hour’s time. They’re already lining up outside, and I gather the numbers are so high the queue is visible from the International Space Station.
