RISC OS Awards: Deadline, and an overdue look at the alternative suggestions

The annual RISC OS Awards poll has now been open for just over two months, and is due to be closed fairly soon. Shortly after the poll began I moved home and didn’t properly set up any computers for quite some time, so the planned occasional review and post of the ‘alternative’ entries didn’t happen, other than one quiet afternoon when I scanned through the votes that had been received at that point and tweeted those alternative entries.

Time to get ready for your trip to Wakefield

It is time once again for RISC OS users to make their annual pilgrimage oop north! This year’s Wakefield Show will take place on Saturday, 27th April – a day shy of two weeks from now – so as I type this, all the exhibitors will be heading into their final fortnight of relaxation, able to put their feet up having prepared everything for the show long in advance. No, of course, they won’t! For most exhibitors the next couple of weeks will probably see them at their busiest, adding…

News nybble: Scout out Recce at the Southwest Show

There will be a new application released by Sine Nomine at Saturday’s Southwest Show for use with map-app RiscOSM. The software is designed to allow you to check out a particular place ahead of time if you are planning or considering a trip there, by pulling in photographs from various online sources. Subject to the availabitlity of an internet connection, Sine Nomine’s Matthew Phillips hopes to be able to demonstrate it in use in his theatre talk. And since it has been made possible by the recent RISC OS Open…

News bit: Find your way with some free maps

Unknown to RISCOSitory before now, it appears Bernard Boase Veasey has some vector maps (with contour data) available to download for use in RiscOSM. The maps cover Ecuador, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Kenya, Zambia, and Israel, and have just been updated with optimisations for use with the style sheet features in the latest versions of the mapping application from Sine Nomine

Show report: Wakefield 2018

That’s last year’s record for a long-delayed show report broken! This year’s Wakefield Show took place on 21st April, at the Cedar Court Hotel, organised by the local user group – the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC). Like last year, I must apologise for another long-delayed RISCOSitory show report. As ever, this is mainly because of how busy I am outside the world of RISC OS, but also because I wanted to edit down my video recordings of the theatre talks to a more manageable length – and video…

London Show snippets

As everyone in RISC OS land should know by now, this year’s London Show will take place tomorrow at the St Giles Hotel in Feltham. With my exhibitor hat on, I get very busy in the run up to a show – and I also deal with trying to get any last minute news posted here before the show takes place. But, as ever, it depends largely on the news being sent to me in the first place – not all of it is. With that in mind, I’ve done…

Show report: Southwest 2018

Better late than never, but not as late as last year – so that’s something, right? This year’s Southwest Show took place on Saturday, 24th February, at the Webbington Hotel and Spa – the same venue at which it has been held every year since its inception. This year’s show was therefore the 21st, marking twenty years since the very first one, held in February 1998. There was therefore cake – which you missed out on if you didn’t come to the show, and which everyone who was present enjoyed.…

RISC OS Awards: Another look at the alternative options for 2017

If you haven’t yet voted, why not do so now? The RISC OS Awards poll for 2017 has been open now since mid-March and will be coming to a close in a couple of weeks time. As such, now is an ideal time to take another look at some of the alternative nominations people have made if they felt something other than the options on offer deserve to win in any given category. If you have yet to vote, please do so as soon as possible in order to your…
