PlayIt 1.73 release 2

There’s no sound like a SharedSound. PlayIt is a tool for playing sound samples, which is used by a number of RISC OS applications, including DigitalCD. Originally written by Rick Hudson, recent updates have been made available by Christopher Martin, who has just released version 1.73 release 2. This release incorporates Jeffrey Lee’s latest PlayItSSnd, an output driver for PlayIt to allow the module to use the SharedSound system, which allows CD tracks to be played in the background on systems lacking analogue audio. Version 1.11 of the driver was…

RTMPDump comes to RISC OS

Got the hump that streaming gives RISC OS the bump? Get RTMPDump! RTMPDump is a command line tool for fetching RTMP streams and saving them to a local drive, which nicely complements FFmpeg and FFplay – so it is perhaps no surprise that version 2.3 of the software has been ported to RISC OS (as release 1.00) by none other than Christopher Martin, who has been responsible for bringing us new versions of those two applications. RTMP stands for Real Time Messaging Protocol, and was originally developed by Macromedia (now…

FFmpeg and FFplay updates

Movie magic! Development of FFmpeg and FFplay continues, with Christopher Martin having released version 1.23 of these applications a few days before this year’s Wakefield show. FFmpeg is a versatile, open source, multi-platform video and audio converter, described as “the leading multimedia framework, able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created” on its home site. The software makes it possible to process many movie formats which would otherwise either not be possible, or at least very difficult and…

Snippets – 6th August 2011

Dorian Computing have made available from their website one updated and one new piece of software. Originally written by Philip Macfarlane in 1991 and “released into the public domain,” DragCom is an application designed to provide a desktop front-end for star commands, making it easier to specify arguments (often files) by allowing them to be dragged onto the main window. This not only reduces the potential for errors when typing the path and filename, but it also removes the need to repeatedly type it if a series of commands needs…

Hot on the heels of the announcement from RISC OS Open Ltd about their bounty scheme, Jim Lesurf has announced a ‘cash prize’ of £300 for someone (or a group): To develop the USB stack/interface, user API, etc, to allow [modern high quality USB devices like the Halide Bridge, Arcam rDAC, etc] to be ‘plug and play’ with ‘native’ ARM hardware running RISC OS. Thus enabling RISC OS users to make use of modern USB devices for high quality audio playing (and recording). Jim goes on to detail on the…
