Three! Count ’em! And new micro-SD cards, too! Just prior to the Midlands Show, R-Comp announced that “Super Pack 6” was available for owners of the original ARMini computer, as well as BeagleBoard users who have subscribed to the BeagleBoard Support Scheme, shortly followed by the option to upgrade to 16/32GB micro-SD cards. Later in the same month, the second OS upgrade for members of R-Comp’s PiPlus scheme was made available, that being a similar arrangement as the BeagleBoard Support Scheme, but for Raspberry Pi owners. And, not leaving out…

Wake catch up! wake catch up! King news in a Catholic RISCOSitory style. When I resurrected the Snippets format back in July, I commented that it hadn’t brought me entirely up to date with RISC OS news and, with the Midlands Show fast approaching at that point, I predicted that I would very likely fall further behind again. In the period after the show, I’ve only been able to publish a few items on RISCOSitory – mainly show news, which I try to get online ASAP, even if I don’t…

A chip off for the old block RiscPC. Shortly after unveiling it at the Midlands Show on July 13th, RISC OS Open Ltd announced the official release of RISC OS 5.20 – the latest ‘stable’ version* – towards the end of the month. This version incorporates a massive 625 changes for the IYONIX pc, and 654 changes for the OMAP3 platform, as used on the BeagleBoard. Many of the changes are common to both platforms, but there are – obviously – differences between the hardware and facilities offered by the…

Sent messages no longer travel through time. Rob Sprowson, aka Sprow, has fixed a couple of minor niggles with Pluto, Jonathan Duddington’s popular email and news client, originally released in 1997 as a commercial product, and since made open source. In early July, Sprow addressed a bug which, for some people, caused the time to be displayed an hour ahead when looking at a sent message. About a month later, he fixed another bug whereby dropping a text file with DOS line-endings

If the Cybermen threatened to “backspace” it just wouldn’t seem as bad! In a post on the RISC OS Open forums in July, Steve Fryatt explained that he has updated several old modules. The purpose of the updates was, to start with, to make them more maintainable. They were originally assembled using Darren Salt’s ExtBasAsm module, which means the work had to be done in a RISC OS environment. However, Steve’s RISC OS development work tends to take place on Linux these days

More bang for your buck? More desk[top space] for your money! Steve Revill, wearing his 7th software* hat rather than his RISC OS Open Ltd one, announced a new version of MoreDesk at the start of July – a version which brings a number of significant fixes and improvements, and builds upon the previous version (1.24, apparently – ahem!) With MoreDesk, users can organise their windows over a space that is larger than the normal RISC OS desktop – a facility it provides by creating a grid of “desktop spaces”,…

The Dark Disc Knight rises Dave Ruck (aka Druck) announced towards the end of June* that new versions of TimerMod, AppStat and CPUload can be found on the ARM Club website. The updates correct for “code which could crash if used on the Raspberry Pi when the NetTime module had adjusted the system timer for the real time clock running too fast,” according to Druck’s announcement, who therefore recommended that the new versions are downloaded if they are to be run on the credit card sized computer.
