Also: There will be mince pies. (Hmm… should this have been the headline?) The December meeting of the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club takes place on the 6th – that’s this Wednesday – and Tony Bartram of AMCOG Games will be the guest speaker, discussing the art of writing games and producing the necessary audio-visual effects with RISC OS. All of AMCOG’s games to date will be demonstrated, including an in-development first person perspective zombie game, and RDSP – Tony’s sound synthesis engine. If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at writing games, but you’re unsure how to go about it, then attending the next RISC OS User Group of London meeting on Monday, 17th July, might not be a bad start – because Tony Bartram of AMCOG Games will be the group’s guest speaker for the evening, talking about the AMCOG Development Kit. While it can’t take care of the most difficult part of game development – coming up with the initial idea – the Kit is designed to make game…

Hot on the heels of a new release of Cyborg, which was written using the AMCOG Development Kit, AMCOG Games has released an updated version of the Kit itself, with version 1.03 having been made available yesterday. The aim of the package is to make it simpler for people to get into writing games for RISC OS, using BBC BASIC. As such, the central core of the kit is a library of BASIC functions that cover sprite plotting, error handling, screen transitions, MP3 playback, and much more. There is also…

Thankfully, though, that doesn’t turn it into a dodgy 1993 sequel1 Launched earlier this year at Wakefield by AMCOG Games, Cyborg is an arcade action game by Tony Bartram in which you take on the role of a cyborg treasure hunter, seeking out ancient treasure in Castle CyberDroid – and Tony has just pushed out Cyborg Second Edition, an update to the game that brings it up to version 2.20.

You’ve heard of ‘Four from Toyah’, right? Well this is free from Tony! Mutant Penguin sets the player as a penguin that is, well, mutated slightly from your normal, everyday penguin: It’s not made of chocolate (bizarre, yes, I know). Worse than that, it’s not the only…

The fruit of that labour is the AMCOG Development Kit, which was first sold on CD at the show, and is now available to buy from !Store for a mere £14.99. The driving principle behind the kit is to make writing games on RISC OS much simpler, and it includes a core library providing functions in BBC…

With the last couple of months having been somewhat busy here in the bunker, I’ve not yet had time to write a Southwest Show report – indeed, it is only just over a week ago that I was finally able to sit down and watch the four talks given at the show, which I was able to capture with my video camera on the day. Following that, I was able to devote some time over the Easter weekend to doing a little editing work on them, before uploading the results…
Read MoreNews nybble: RDSP beta receives a tune up
AMCOG Games’ Tony Bartram has released an updated beta [zip] version of his Wavebox-inspired synthesiser module, RDSP. The module provides modern RISC OS computer systems with the means to both synthesise sounds, and play back sound samples with various effects applied to them. The latest version – the second beta release – adds support for modulating samples via BASIC’s ENVELOPE command, support for sample looping (which means a simple drum loop, for example, can be made to play indefinitely), increases the number of channels to sixteen, and much more. For…
