It’s time to drag yourself away from whatever else you might be doing and drop yourself off at a certain London pub (or in front of your computer) for the next RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) meeting, which takes place on Monday, 21st April, and features Chris Dewhurst talking to the group about Drag ‘n Drop.

Last October, RISC OS users were introduced to Andrew Oyston by way of that month’s Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC) meeting. Andrew is a retro hardware and games enthusiast who has covered RISC OS (and other topics) in Pixel Addict magazine1 – and he has been in touch to highlight another article he has written in another publication.

With very few exceptions, magazines that centre on RISC OS have tended to come and go since the operating system first appeared1, and only a very small number have stayed the course and continue to be published today. One of those is the magazine published by the German Archimedes Group, GAG-News, which has been published every two months since April 1992 – making it one of the oldest RISC OS magazines still being published, and the oldest – and only – regularly published German language publication for the platform.

Back in 2020 when the Archive Magazine found a new home with him after Jim Nagel sadly passed away, Gavin Smith proposed a bi-monthly publishing schedule, with each new issue expected to land on our doormats once every couple of months. Unfortunately, that didn’t come to pass for his first volume for a variety of reasons – not least of which was the timing. When he took over we were already in the throes of a pandemic, with all the ramifications of that, such as lockdowns and homeschooling, and like…

That’s 175 issues, not 175 years, obviously! In May of this year, the German Archimedes Group magazine GAG-News will have reached its 175th issue, having been published consistently every two months since April 1992. The magazine’s publisher, Herbert zur Nedden, notes that this probably makes it the only printed1 Acorn/RISC OS magazine to have managed such a long run with no breaks in its schedule.

Gavin Smith, the new editor of Archive, has announced his plans for the magazine, including an expected date for the first issue to be published with him at the helm, the schedule moving forwards – and of course subscription prices. Subscribers recently received issue 24:6 – a rounding off of the previous volume, edited and published as a fitting tribute to the late Jim Nagel by his family. The next issue, therefore, will mark the start of Gavin’s editorship by also being the start of a new volume, and that…

A new issue of Archive magazine – volume 24 issue 6 – has been produced by Bart Nagel, and if you are a subscriber it should by now have landed on your doormats. In fact, even if the previous issue – 24:5 – marked the end of your subscription, you should have received a copy of 24:6 anyway.

Well, a Wakefield Show near you, if you’re near Wakefield, obviously. The Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club – the group that organises the annual Wakefield Show – will be launching the ninth edition of their back catalogue CD at this year’s show, which takes place on Saturday, 27th April.

Something to read on the train on the way to the show, perhaps? A little bird has informed me that the next issue of the lesser-spotted Archive Magazine has been printed and was being bundled into envelopes the other day. With the Wakefield Show now just six days away, the obvious thing to infer is that Archive’s editor, Jim Nagel, intends for subscribers to receive their copy before the show takes place – so it can probably be expected to arrive in the next few days.
