NetSurf gains experimental Javascript support

I blinked and I missed it. Isn’t it just typical that something particularly notable would happen during the period in which I was less able to devote any time to RISCOSitory? That something was Javascript support coming to RISC OS NetSurf, in the form of test/experimental builds, which was announced in mid-December on the NetSurf users mailing list by Vincent Sanders, who said:

Genealogy app GedText v1.14 released

GedText gets text from GEDCOM. Geddit? In early December, Rob Hemmings announced a new version of GedText, his application that extracts information from GEDCOM files, and presents it as text in a more human-friendly format, or as a DDF file for use with EasiWriter and Techwriter, Impression or Ovation Pro. GEDCOM, which is short for GEnealogical Data COMmunication, is a file format for exchanging data between different genealogical software packages. Genealogy, of course, is the popular pastime of tracing ancestry and family trees and histories.

SampleEd 0.70 released

Sound as a pound! A new version of SampleEd was released in early December last year by The Really Small Software Company. Not covered on RISCOSitory before, SampleEd is a sound sample editor that provides support for a wide range of different sample formats and a variety of different processing effects. The application operates as a disc-based editor, with the sample being worked on remaining on disc rather than in memory, which means it is not limited by the amount of memory present in the computer.

TBX C++ library version 0.6 alpha available

Classy! Back at the end of November, Alan Buckley released a new version of TBX, his C++ library. SyncDiscs 1.25 released

Sync it to me, baby! Described on its website (mirror) as “A versatile disc backup program”, SyncDiscs is an application that will ensure the contents of two discs or directories are kept the same. Example uses of the software include keeping backup copies of a disc or directory – unsurprisingly, given that tagline – or keeping one computer’s disc synchronised with the another. Chris Johnson, also known for applications such as UnitConv, has taken over the maintenance and development of SyncDiscs with the full agreement and encouragement of its original…

PackMan 0.7-3 beta available

Moving instead of stubbing? Maybe it’s time to stop snubbing! The end of November saw the release of a new version of PackMan, an alternative package manager to RiscPkg for downloading and installing software for RISC OS computer systems that has been packaged and distributed using the RISC OS Packaging Project. Packaging on RISC OS has been a contentious issue since it was first introduced, with valid arguments for its use being presented by its proponents, and equally valid arguments, frequently about the implementation above all else, being presented by…

Fireworkz and Fireworkz Pro updates

Dynamite! Back in late 2011, RISC OS users saw the welcome return of Fireworkz and Fireworkz Pro, an integrated word processor, spreadsheet and – in the case of the Pro version – database package. The software, originally from Colton Software, had been resurrected by Stuart Swales, and has seen a number of releases since. Fireworkz (and the file compatible Fireworkz for Windows) are now free to download from Gerald Fitton’s Abacus Training website, and are both now up to version 1.34/10. Updates to Fireworkz Pro, which remains commercial and is…

Transient 2.06 released

Daily directories for saving safely. Fred Graute, current maintainer of StrongED, released a new version of Transient towards the end of last year, a utility that provides a temporary directory on the hard drive, creating a new subdirectory each day in order to help organise files. The application puts an icon on the left side of the icon bar that can be used much like a RAM disk, to which you can drag and save files, such as downloads from a web browser. Unlike the RAM disk, however, the files…

UnitConv 2.35 available

A conversion is as good as a rest. Late last year, Chris Johnson made available version 2.35 of UnitConv, his application for performing conversions between different units. Mainly offering SI and Imperial units, UnitConv also allows for some more specialised conversions, such as energy equivalents, along with a few other gems, such as binary, octal, hexadecimal and decimal conversions, a gas molecule speed calculator and an image size reckoner.
