A day at the races RISC OS event.

It’s approaching the end of April 2013, and this year’s Wakefield Show has come and gone. This year’s show was the eighteenth, and was once again held at the Cedar Court Hotel, very close to junction 39 of the M1 – the same venue at which it has been held for the last few years, and where the show was originally held all those years ago.

As usual, I was there to demonstrate and discuss my products, and also – in theory – to get a gist of what was happening so that I could report about it on RISCOSitory. Things didn’t go quite as planned, however, and I barely left my stand throughout the entire show for a number of reasons, ranging from still being tired after an extra long drive the day before through to generally being that much busier than usual on the stand itself. At last!

This year’s RISC OS South West show took place yesterday a couple of weeks ago, on 23rd February, 2013 – its customary late February Saturday. And I’m pleased to say that this year, I managed to find my way to the Webbington Hotel easily, without taking any wrong turns and without getting lost.

I still managed to turn up late, though, and arrived after the show had already opened to the public. That is, however, fully in keeping with tradition – getting lost last year caused me to arrive late, and when I’ve exhibited at the show before, I typically arrived either just as the show was opening to the public, or just after.

So that’s okay, then. Continue reading »

Yet another better late than never report!

Wakefield RISC OS Computer Show, 2012

Wakefield RISC OS Computer Show, 2012

The last fortnight or so has been a busy one for me, and a major contributor to that has been the annual Wakefield Show, organised as usual by the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC), and held at the Cedar Court Hotel. The show took place on Saturday 28th April, 2012, and it made me busy in the week running up to it because I decided I’d have something new(ish) on show (more on that later), and in the week following it because I had to do the work I’d put off in order to work on that new(ish) something!

As for the show itself,  I did have a fairly quiet morning on my stand, becoming busier later in the day. I initially tried taking advantage of that to wander around and speak to other exhibitors, but while my own stand was quiet, everyone else seemed busy and, of course, as the day progressed and I became busier, I had less opportunity to wander around myself.

That isn’t to say I didn’t manage it, though, because I did. I wasn’t able to speak to as many exhibitors as I would have liked – and my photographs are among the worst show photographs I’ve taken yet (guess who forgot to use his flash), but despite that I have managed to gather enough information to put together a reasonable account of what was being demonstrated and sold on the various stands, with a bit of photo editing thrown in to add a bit of colour and break up the text. So, without further ado, let’s take an anti-clockwise stroll around the show, starting with the first stand a visitor would see as he entered the hall: Continue reading »

This year’s RISC OS South West Show almost didn’t happen. Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd, the show’s organiser for the last few years, revealed recently that he normally waits for the Webbington Hotel, the show’s usual venue, to reduce the prices of the rooms in which the show can be held – and it seems even more recently (early January, according to Archive 23:4, p4), Paul said that he wouldn’t be organising another show. Richard Brown of Orpheus Internet soon stepped up, with Andrew Rawnsley and R-Comp joining him to make sure we still had a show in the South West.

Considering that neither had any experience of actually organising a show, and that they only had a very short time in which to do it in order to ensure the show took place at its normal time of year, they should both be applauded for their efforts: Both visitors and exhibitors alike seem to have found the show an enjoyable and successful one.

Including me! Continue reading »
