News nybble: Two significant ARMX6 upgrades from R-Comp

R-Comp have announced a new network driver for the ARMX6 that can provide a performance boost of between one and a half and ten times. Most users should see a benefit, but some more so than others – users with mixed speed devices on their networks, for example, should see more consistent behaviour and less problematic networking with Acorn Access or ShareFS. The latest RISC OS build for ARMX6 computers also now includes support for disc partitioning – something that has been notably lacking on RISC OS until now. Partitioning…

News nybble: Raid your wallets for a RAID drive

New product from R-Comp at the Southwest Show this Saturday! With a nod towards the potential hurdles setting up network attached storage for those less technically inclined, and another towards the need to have good backups (which many people to this day still fail to do), R-Comp will be launching a two disc RAID mirrored storage solution for RISC OS users on Saturday. Bundles will be available consisting of the RAID solution, and SafeStore 2, the company’s backup software. Related to this, the company will be announcing disc partitioning support…

Three! Count ’em! And new micro-SD cards, too! Just prior to the Midlands Show, R-Comp announced that “Super Pack 6” was available for owners of the original ARMini computer, as well as BeagleBoard users who have subscribed to the BeagleBoard Support Scheme, shortly followed by the option to upgrade to 16/32GB micro-SD cards. Later in the same month, the second OS upgrade for members of R-Comp’s PiPlus scheme was made available, that being a similar arrangement as the BeagleBoard Support Scheme, but for Raspberry Pi owners. And, not leaving out…

Updates to Fat32FS, Doom and Twinworld patch, new download page

It’s like a snippets post, but all for one developer! Fat32FS, a filing system for USB mass storage devices, has been updated to version 1.40. Announcing the update last week, developer Jeffrey Doggett explained that with this release the drive label can be changed from the menu, rather than having to use the command line, and that it also shows the partitions (if any) in use on the drive, and now partially supports extended partitions. At the same time, Jeffrey announced version 1.11 of Doom, his port to RISC OS…

Snippets – 19th November 2011

Following on from the news that Pipedream is now free to download, Gerald Fitton has announced that Fireworkz for RISC OS is also now free to download. Fireworkz is an integrated word processor and spreadsheet package, with some very powerful and useful facilities, which works in a fundamentally different way to PipeDream. Both are very powerful and useful pieces of software and, if you haven’t used them before, they come highly recommended. A mailing list has also been set up for the software on Google Groups by Stuart Swales, the…
