Better late than never, but not as late as last year – so that’s something, right?

This year’s Southwest Show took place on Saturday, 24th February, at the Webbington Hotel and Spa – the same venue at which it has been held every year since its inception. This year’s show was therefore the 21st, marking twenty years since the very first one, held in February 1998. There was therefore cake – which you missed out on if you didn’t come to the show, and which everyone who was present enjoyed. And so ends this show report: That’s all you need to know, really.

Oh, you want a little more detail? Oh well, if you insist… Continue reading »

The question on everyone’s lips for countless years to come will be “Where were you on 28th October, 2017?”

Okay, they probably won’t be asking that – but I’m asking it now.

Well? Where were you?

I’ll tell you where I was: Feltham. More specifically, the St Giles Hotel – in the conference rooms on the first floor, where this year’s London Show was held. If you weren’t there, I’ll assume you’re reading this because you have an interest in RISC OS, and would like to know what you missed. In which case, read on… Continue reading »

Seven months on? This must be some kind of a record!

The RISC OS Southwest Show this year took place on 25th February – so this show report sets quite a record for the time between the event and its appearance at just under seven months. Unfortunately, this is a reflection of the amount of time I’ve had available in that intervening period to sit down and write the report. Which is to say: very little.

To make matters slightly worse, I usually refer to the photos I’ve taken at the show as a means to remind myself of who was there, what they were demonstrating, and so on – and this year, I forgot to take my camera. I did take a few pictures with my phone, but I really don’t like my phone as a camera (it’s perfectly capable, it’s just the way it has to be held, etc.) and therefore only have a few pictures. It’s not only Smarties that have the answer – ROUGOL does too!

If you want to know what happened at last month’s Wakefield Show, a reasonable approach would be to read the RISCOSitory report – but I haven’t written it yet. The workload here in the bunker is such that the report is still to be written for the earlier Southwest Show – so the Wakefield one might be a while. You could also look at the videos of the theatre talks, but apart from one, I haven’t even watched them, let alone edited and uploaded them for you to do the same.

So what is the discerning RISC OS user who was unable to attend Wakefield to do? Continue reading »

Didn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Bangor London?

Looking down the main hall at London 2016

This year’s RISC OS London Show took place on 29th October, and while it wasn’t as large as last year’s event (which I’ll discuss near the end of this report) it was still an enjoyable and worthwhile one. So, without any further preamble, here is a run down of what visitors could have seen, working clockwise from the entrance.

Right, I’ve been up to Wakefield, had a cup of tea and a little walk, and now it’s… er, June!?

The annual trip to the North for RISC OS users – the Wakefield Acorn & RISC OS Computer Show – took place this year on 16th April, at the Cedar Court Hotel, Denby Dale, near Wakefield – the venue at which it originally started in 1996 before setting off for pastures new, and to where it returned some years ago and has remained ever since. If I’d finished this two days ago, there might have been a 28 Days Later movie reference here! Oh wait, there still is!

This year’s Southwest Show took place on 27th February, and while this year it attracted fewer paying customers through the door than last year (more on that later) there was still a positive vibe, and people – both visitors and exhibitors – seem to have enjoyed the day. So much so that, with next year’s date already set, all but two of this year’s exhibitors have already confirmed attendance. Continue reading »

The who and the what. The only why is why weren’t you there?

The 2015 RISC OS London Show took place on 24th October, 2015 – and while the number of visitors was (I believe) just shy of 110, there were plenty of RISC OS users unable to attend. So what did they miss?

Aaaaaand breathe!

It has been a massive seven weeks since this year’s Wakefield Show – so if you’ve turned a rather unsightly colour as a result of holding your breath waiting for the RISCOSitory show report, it’s now time to breathe normally again and let your normal colour return! Continue reading »
