Eggzy – another Code the Classics conversion

Barely giving himself time for a good fry up after releasing a RISC OS conversion of Beatstreets, Jeroen Vermeulen is back with another of the games in Code the Classics Volume II. This time, he’s released a RISC OS version of Eggzy.

With the classic Dizzy series from the Oliver Twins as its inspiration, in this game you control a blue egg-like character (the chief differences being things like arms, legs, eyes, and a mouth… and, um, a flame on top… all of which eggs tend to lack) called Eggzy, and your objective is to collect all the gems, while avoiding the various enemies.

Well, mostly avoid them – you can jump on their heads to eliminate them, though some of them have harder skulls, so it’ll need multiple attempts.

The ultimate goal in Eggzy is to complete the game as quickly as possible. This means there are no ‘lives’ as such – if an enemy kills you, the level simply restarts, which means you have to play it again in order to progress, thus adding to your overall time.

Once you have a time, you can effectively play against yourself in order to better it – but rather than simply having a target time, when you play again you’ll see a ghost-like image of the egg-like Eggzy; this indicates where you were on that level at the same point in time on your last attempt. You’re effectively racing against yourself.

The game can be played from the keyboard, or with a SNES-like game controller pad. It has been tested on RISC OS 5.30/5.31 on a Raspberry Pi 2, RPCEmu 0.9.5, and a Raspberry Pi 4, and is expected to work on other RISC OS 5 platforms, with a Pi 4 or equivalent being the recommended hardware platform. It can be downloaded from !Store.
