Celebrating thirty years of GAG-News with ROUGOL

With very few exceptions, magazines that centre on RISC OS have tended to come and go since the operating system first appeared1, and only a very small number have stayed the course and continue to be published today. One of those is the magazine published by the German Archimedes Group, GAG-News, which has been published every two months since April 1992 – making it one of the oldest RISC OS magazines still being published, and the oldest – and only – regularly published German language publication for the platform.

30th October, 2021, marked the return to physical shows in the UK, when the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) hosted their customary October event at the St Giles Hotel in Feltham – the RISC OS London Show. While the last couple of years have been a little less than ideal because of the pandemic, there have been some positive developments, such as the unexpected move to online meetings for some user groups, allowing people to join them from afar. Another useful benefit has been that some people were able to find a little more time for programming, allowing software to be written that might otherwise not have been.

Back in January 2020, the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) moved from their previous home of some eighteen years to a new one, after the old pub had unexpectedly closed. With the arrival of the coronavirus on the UK’s shores and the subsequent lockdowns, however, the meetings moved online after only a small number of meetings at the new venue. Gerph to fan the Pyromaniac flames at ROUGOL

Last November, Gerph gave a talk to the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) on the subject of Pyromaniac, which he initially launched earlier that year as the RISC OS Build Service, and discussed how it came about and how it was developed, and its practical use for testing things. One year on, he is returning to the group to give a follow-up presentation, to update the group on what he’s done with it since.

Organised as an online event last year because of the pandemic, the RISC OS London Show is returning to the physical world this year, and will take place on Saturday, 30th October, at its customary venue: St Giles Hotel,Feltham,TW14 9AD. The doors will be open to the public from 11:00am until 5:00pm, with an entry fee of £5.00 for adults – under-16s can get in for free.

Depending on which platform you use, there may be a number of different options available to you for RISC OS itself. As well as the standard distribution from RISC OS Open Ltd (ROOL), for example, there’s also the ePic option, also from ROOL, which – for a price – adds a great deal of bundled commercial software. Then there’s RISC OS Direct from RISC OS Developments Ltd, and if you’re opting for an emulated solution, what about older versions of RISC OS?

This would normally be done in the form of a thread on the RISCOSitory Twitter account followed by a post here on the site, with the Awards website itself then updated accordingly… This year, however, things are being handled a little differently.
