Mark Moxon to talk to ROUGOL about networking Elite – 18th August

Note, that’s ‘networking Elite’ and not ‘THE networking elite’

At the next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL), on Monday, 18th August, Mark Moxon will be joining everyone in the pub to talk about the things he’s done since the last time he visited, almost two years ago.

His main focus will most decidedly NOT be on people who consider themselves to be elite, and how they network amongst themselves, and instead on how he has added network – specifically Econet – support to Elite, beginning with an overview of what network support actually entails, and how he first added it to the original BBC version of Elite.

Another project Mark undertook since that last visit was to analyse and document the code for Lander, the first ever Archimedes arcade-style game, supplied as a demo with every early ARM-based computer from Acorn, and from which the commercial title Zarch was developed. And with that completed, he then modified the code to increase the size of the game map, creating BigLander.

Returning to Elite, he will then look at his latest project – the Electron version of the game, modified to work in sideways RAM (which can be added to the Electron through a hardware expansion). In doing this, all the features of the BBC version that had to be removed (in order the game to run on the more limited machine) have been re-implemented.

More detailed information about what Mark has done with the game can be found on his Elite page

As usual, the meeting will be a hybrid one with some people attending in person, and others joining from home via Zoom.

You can attend the meeting in person at:

The Duke of Sussex
(Upstairs in the Chichester or Petworth Room)
23 Baylis Road,
London,
SE1 7AY.

As noted above, the guest speaker will be at the pub, so that will provide the best experience. However, if that’s not an option you can attend online from wherever you are (as long as you have an internet connection and a suitable device) by using Zoom.

There will be ROUGOL members lurking in the pub from around 6:30pm, and the Zoom meeting will open from 7:30pm to give people time to join – the meeting proper will commence from around 7:45pm.

There are directions on the ROUGOL website for people joining in person, and if you’re joining online you’ll need the meeting credentials – these remain the same as usual, but if you haven’t previously joined a meeting you can get these by contacting the group in plenty of time.

Looking ahead, you can look forward to ‘Book Publishing with Ovation Pro’ by Gavin Crawford on 15th September, a pre-show teaser from RISCOSbits on 20th October, an update from Gerph about Pyromaniac on 17th November, and Rob Napier on the subject of ‘Acorn Biography’ on 15th December – all well worth attending if you can.
