ScummVM 2.9.0 released

Supporting some fifteen additional games, a new version of ScummVM has arrived. The software is maintained by a team of programmers across a number of platforms, with Cameron Cawley to be thanked for his work bringing each release to RISC OS.

ScummVM is a ‘virtual machine’ originally developed to allow games to be played that were based on LucasArts’ Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. By effectively replacing the executable component that came with such games, which was specific to the platforms on which the games were originally released, the ‘scripted’ element could be played wherever ScummVM can be run.

The scope of the software has since expanded beyond that first script-based engine, however, and ScummVM now supports several additional systems – which means the number of games that can be played using it has increased with each new release, and this one is no exception.

Full details of the newly supported games, as well as information about enhancements made to the engines supported – and of course the actual download of version 2.9.0 – can be found on the ScummVM website.
