With the London Show now just a week away – technically less given that it’s now the evening of the 17th – the announcements have started to appear, and RISCOSitory has had to switch to ‘just quote ’em in full’ mode (with the occasional tweak to make them suit the medium, and stylistic changes here and there). Here’s a very interesting one from RISC OS Developments:
Those who watched Andrew’s presentation to the Wakefield User Group in September this year will have already heard an introduction to the RISC OS Renaissance Project. There is a video of the talk online.
The RISC OS Renaissance is an umbrella name given to various 64-bit projects and initiatives, as well as various new software releases all blossoming together to give RISC OS users lots of new software and visible progress on the road to 64-bit RISC OS. It is community driven, and open source, with ROD providing resources to assist where necessary. The projects goals can be summarised as:
- Bring new features to the OS at a time when focus is on 64-bit.
- Convert modules to C or other high level languages in the process.
- Field test new C code alongside these new features.
- Built on top of existing RISC OS 5.
- Delivered in partnership with other developers.
- Using modern development tools to deliver new features to you sooner.
- Open Source for the benefit of the whole community.
- No additional funding required to get started.
- First deliverables in September 2026 (LanMan98 with SMB2/3 and WebDAV – PCloud) with much more to follow (see Draw/Paint below).
We hope to share more fruits of the project very shortly.
A full PDF explanation of the project is available, and you can also download LanMan98 and the Revised “Director’s Cuts” of Paint and Draw.
Of course, lots more will be shown at the London Show in a little over a week’s time.
