Starting with the i.MX6-based systems, R-Comp’s sister company RCI – which handles the hardware side of things – is rolling out ‘OS Update 24’ for the various computers they sell.
This update is based around a May 2026 build of RISC OS 5.31, with platform-specific enhancements and selected updates to disc image components where applicable.
Andrew Rawnsley explained that because there are quite a few models of computer in their product range, from a logistical point of view the upgrade process is a large task – as well as preparing the update, it has to be fully tested to ensure it can be carried out smoothly by end users, and that has to be done for each of those models.
The i.MX6 version (which will be for both the full ‘retail’ machine as supplied by R-Comp, as well as the DIY version) is being rolled out first because the company had a specific request for an operating system based around the ROM image being used, so it was the first to get the test treatment. However, each of the following platforms can expect to see an update become available over the coming period:
- mini.m – both retail and DIY
- Pinebook A64 (white) – 11″ (tested) and 14″ (untested)
- Pinebook Pro (black) – RK3399, including Wi-Fi
- RockyRAID (RK3399) and other RockPi-based designs
- OrangePi800 (RK3399)
- 4te (original)
- 4te2
- 4tissimo
- mini.pi
- N.Ex.T
- Hydra
Andrew explains that the exact features present in OS Upgrade 24 will vary from one platform to the next, with further information posted to the user mailing list (details of which users receive when they purchase a computer from the company). The exact mechanism for upgrading is also provided as part of the Welcome Guide when the computer (or membership of the support scheme for DIY models) is purchased.
