Ovation Pro and book publishing – ROUGOL meeting, 15th September

The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will take place on Monday, 15th September, with Gavin Crawford taking the podium to talk about how he uses Ovation Pro in his publishing business.

A graphic artist and designer with over forty years experience in the field of printing and publishing, Gavin started out at his family’s printing company in the mid-1980s, at which time artwork was hand-drawn. He introduced BBC Micros for admin tasks, later to be replaced by RISC OS machines, and by the mid-1990s all the artwork used by the company was being created digitally in Draw.

Four decades later, Gavin and his wife, Susan, who is a knitwear designer and fashion historian, publish knitting books and patterns under the imprint Susan Crawford Vintage, and run their own dye-house called Assa Marra Wool Studio, through which they produce a range of hand-dyed knitting yarns.

As part of his journey from that family company to the current day, Gavin has become something of an expert in the use of Ovation Pro, which he uses to produce publications ranging from PDFs and eBooks, to full-colour printed volumes – and for which he has developed a number of custom applets; programs that run within the desktop publishing package to streamline his workflow.

His presentation on Monday evening will be a demonstration of how he uses Ovation Pro for this, showing how some of his applets work – and sharing hints and tips to get the best of the desktop publishing app.

As usual, the meeting will be a hybrid one with some people attending in person, and others joining from home via Zoom.

You can attend the meeting in person at:

The Duke of Sussex
(Upstairs in the Chichester or Petworth Room)
23 Baylis Road,
London,
SE1 7AY.

There will be ROUGOL members lurking in the pub from around 6:30pm, and the Zoom meeting will open from 7:30pm to give people time to join – the meeting proper will commence from around 7:45pm.

There are directions on the ROUGOL website for people joining in person, and if you’re joining online you’ll need the meeting credentials – these remain the same as usual, but if you haven’t previously joined a meeting you can get these by contacting the group in plenty of time.

Looking ahead, there will be a pre-show teaser from RISCOSbits on 20th October (with the RISC OS London Show itself taking place on Saturday, 25th – just five days later), an update from Gerph about Pyromaniac on 17th November, and Rob Napier on the subject of ‘Acorn Biography’ on 15th December – all well worth attending if you can.
