MACadd adds French, German

With apologies to Kevin Wells for a bit of a delay mentioning the first of these updates (the bunker has been unattended for a couple of weeks), there are two updates to report on MACadd, his application that can be used to look up information about MAC (Media Access Control) addresses.

MAC addresses are twelve digit base 16 (hexadecimal) codes assigned to network interfaces that are on board devices of all sorts, and intended to be unique. Their purpose is to ensure all such devices can be identified and treated accordingly – a simple example might be the way IP addresses are assigned on your local network, where certain addresses may be reserved for certain devices; this would be done by telling the router that whenever it sees a certain MAC address connecting, it should be given a particular IP address.

The way the addresses are issued means that certain information can be gleaned from them about the devices and their manufacturers, and this information can be found online – and this is where MACadd comes in. It provides a simple means to input a MAC address, and will then use Wget to relay that address to a remote site called MAC Address Lookup, and report the results to the user.

The two main updates to the application have been to add support for additional languages. French was added in version 2.02 (which also gained support for F3 as a shortcut to opening a save dialogue box), and German in version 2.03.

If you find any of Kevin’s software, why not consider rewarding him for it by buying some merchandise or with a small contribution.
