RISCOSbits introduces a slimmed-down Chimera for RISC OS North

It’s now less than a week until RISC OS North, which takes place on Saturday, 21st March, and another announcement from RISCOSbits has landed in the bunker:

On the back of the hugely popular Christmas Cracker, RISCOSbits is pleased to introduce Chimera Lite, a streamlined and highly accessible version of the popular Chimera system, making its debut at the RISC OS North Show.

Chimera Lite has been designed for users who want a fast, modern RISC OS machine in a simple, ready-to-go configuration, while still retaining the flexibility that has made the original Chimera such a popular platform.

At its core, Chimera Lite features a 2GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 256GB NVMe drive, delivering a responsive and capable RISC OS desktop suitable for both everyday use and more demanding tasks. The NVMe storage ensures fast boot times and rapid application loading, giving RISC OS the kind of performance that feels thoroughly modern while retaining the familiar elegance of the operating system.

The system comes supplied with a power supply and a fully functional ITX case, creating a tidy, compact desktop machine that can be used immediately with minimal setup. Simply add a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and you are ready to enjoy RISC OS at full speed.

Despite its simplified configuration, Chimera Lite remains true to the spirit of the original Chimera design. While it ships as a single RISC OS “head” system, it has been built so that additional heads can be added easily in the future. This means users can expand their systems to include additional RISC OS environments, Linux systems, or even classic 26-bit RISC OS heads for legacy software compatibility. The modular nature of the Chimera platform makes it an ideal machine for enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting with different environments, while still maintaining a powerful primary RISC OS desktop. We even bundle the necessary parts to make adding additional heads even easier!

In other words, Chimera Lite is not a cut-down system, it is simply a clean starting point for a machine that can grow with its owner.

To celebrate its launch, Chimera Lite will be available at the special RISC OS North Show price of just £349, before any additional show discounts are applied.

Visitors to the RISCOSbits stand will be able to see Chimera Lite in action, explore its expansion possibilities, and discover how the Chimera platform brings together modern hardware performance with the flexibility to run multiple RISC OS environments, and more, within a single system.

Whether you are looking for a fast new RISC OS desktop, a flexible experimental platform, or a machine capable of bridging modern and classic RISC OS environments, Chimera Lite offers an affordable and powerful way to begin.

More details will be available at the RISCOSbits stand during the RISC OS North Show.
