Wakefield 2012 show report

Yet another better late than never report! The last fortnight or so has been a busy one for me, and a major contributor to that has been the annual Wakefield Show, organised as usual by the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC), and held at the Cedar Court Hotel. The show took place on Saturday 28th April, 2012, and it made me busy in the week running up to it because I decided I’d have something new(ish) on show (more on that later), and in the week following it because…

Version 1.01 of Kevin Wells’ Simon Clone, Kevmon, is now available. An new ‘expert’ level has been added in this version, featuring eight coloured lights along with the usual four in the normal game. This release fixes a bug with drives greater than 256GB. In My Diary, the Organizer-like program by Kevin Edwards for Windows, Mac and Linux, is now able to use Organizer’s Journal…

Following on from the news that Pipedream is now free to download, Gerald Fitton has announced that Fireworkz for RISC OS is also now free to download. Fireworkz is an integrated word processor and spreadsheet package, with some very powerful and useful facilities, which works in a fundamentally different way to PipeDream. Both are very powerful and useful pieces of software and, if you haven’t used them before, they come highly recommended. A mailing list has also been set up for the software on Google Groups by Stuart Swales, the…

RISC OS London Show 2011 – Preview

The RISC OS London Show 2011 is finally upon us. In the morning, I will be making my way down to the hall at the St Giles Hotel, Feltham, where I’ve already set up my stand, ready for when the doors are open to the public at 11am. The line up for this year’s show includes plenty of regular faces as well as a few less regular (and perhaps first time) exhibitors, and some special treats – so let’s get straight down to business and look at who and what…

Pi in the sky – or, at least, near Heathrow Airport For those interested in the Raspberry Pi, the RISC OS London Show (29th October, 2011, St Giles Hotel, Feltham) will be well worth a visit, since the tiny, low cost computer is set to make an appearance. It’s not known at this stage if it will be running RISC OS by the time of the show, but it seems likely that it will be on the RISC OS Open Ltd stand, judging by comments in their forum. Speaking of…

Christopher Martin has announced the availability of version 1.20 of FFmpeg and FFplay. FFmpeg is a versatile, open-source, multi-platform video and audio conversion system and FFplay is a very simple media player built upon FFmpeg and SDL. Christopher has also released a new version, 2.13, of Murnong, an application for fetching and decoding videos from YouTube, this update having been made necessary due to changes implemented on the video sharing website.

Midlands MUG Show 2011 report

The Midlands Midsummer MUG show 2011 took place on Saturday 9th July, 2011, and was perhaps one of the quietest RISC OS shows I’ve attended in as long as I can remember, if not the quietest. However, in spite of the very small attendance by users, I did find myself reasonably busy for most of the day, having some fairly long chats with various people – mostly visitors, and some exhibitors, though often not about things RISC OS! (For example, Martin Wuerthner and I discussed the joys of travelling down…

Wakefield 2011: The morning after

Yesterday’s RISC OS show in Wakefield, held in the show’s original venue of the Cedar Court Hotel, Calder Grove, is the 16th show organised by WROCC and one month short of being held on the fifteenth anniversary of the very first, held in the middle of May, 1996. It is also the 10th anniversary (again, offset by about a month) of my first appearance at the show – at any show – as an exhibitor. I had a reasonably busy day, demonstrating various aspects of WebChange to people, but did…

RISC OS London Show – final countdown

It is now just a few days until the RISC OS London Show, 2010, organised by ROUGOL – the RISC OS User Group of London – which takes place on October 23rd at the St Giles Hotel, Feltham. Doors are open to the public from 11am until 5pm, with tickets costing £5 on the door. Directions can be found on both the show website’s venue page as well as the hotel’s own website, and Tim Hill has posted some detailed directions on comp.sys.acorn.misc based on knowledge gained from occasionally working…
