A week later than ordinarily scheduled to avoid a clash with the Jubilee weekend and other plans people may have had, the next meeting of the Midlands User Group (MUG) will take place on Saturday, 11th June, starting at the usual time of 2:00pm.
30th October, 2021, marked the return to physical shows in the UK, when the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) hosted their customary October event at the St Giles Hotel in Feltham – the RISC OS London Show. Understandably under the circumstances, there were fewer exhibitors than in previous years, as well as few visitors; it was a much quieter show than usual – but despite that, it was still an excellent day for finding out what’s happening in the RISC OS world. Strap yourselves in… there’s a lot in this post! Andy Marks of RISCOSbits has been busy in the extended period between the last physical show and Saturday’s London Show, and has a number of new products that he’ll be bringing along to show – and hopefully sell – to you.
Organised as an online event last year because of the pandemic, the RISC OS London Show is returning to the physical world this year, and will take place on Saturday, 30th October, at its customary venue: St Giles Hotel,Feltham,TW14 9AD. The doors will be open to the public from 11:00am until 5:00pm, with an entry fee of £5.00 for adults – under-16s can get in for free.
Having tried to raise funds through a Kickstarter campaign around the start of the year, which fell short of their quite ambitious goal, RISC OS Cloverleaf have had a second try. And this time they seem to have reached their target – which was set much lower than before.
Without going into a fully detailed history,RISC OS Developments Ltd was formed only a few short years ago with the original (and initially hush-hush) aim of funding the development of a web browser. The company has achieved a number of other things since, the most notable of which is probably taking over ownership of RISC OS itself and making it fully open source – but all the same, that original purpose was the web browser.
And gets off to a good start Since late 2019, RISC OS Cloverleaf has been mentioned a few times here on RISCOSitory. It was clear from when the name first appeared that there was going to be a crowdfunding campaign, and this has since been confirmed and expanded on further by Cloverleaf’s Stefan Fröhling.
Tom Williamson of Wi-Fi Sheep will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London – which will once again be taking place online, via Zoom. The subject of Tom’s presentation will be RISC OS Direct, the distribution (or distro) of the OS for the Raspberry Pi (and a version available for use on Windows, MacOS, and Linux via RPCEmu) put together in conjunction with RISC OS Developments Ltd.
At the 2019 London Show, news broke of something to be called RISC OS Direct – a new distribution (distro) of the operating system, and an accompanying video series. The actual launch of RISC OS Direct happened in February, at the Southwest Show, so should be covered in the show report – but that report is currently still a work-in-progress, and is very late, so it seems eminently sensible to write a little something about RISC OS Direct separately.
With 2019 drawing to a close at the end of today, to be immediately followed by a year with the official designation of 2020, it’s time to round up a selection of news that hasn’t been covered on RISCOSitory over the course of the year.
