Tom Williamson of Wi-Fi Sheep will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London – which will once again be taking place online, via Zoom. The subject of Tom’s presentation will be RISC OS Direct, the distribution (or distro) of the OS for the Raspberry Pi (and a version available for use on Windows, MacOS, and Linux via RPCEmu) put together in conjunction with RISC OS Developments Ltd.

While RISC OS may now be regarded as a small, niche operating system, with only a tiny fraction of the number of users that more mainstream platforms attract, it does still have a surprisingly vibrant community – so with that in mind, every once in a while I look through a selection of news groups, mailing lists, and forums, looking for announcements that haven’t found their way to me via the RISCOSitory news inbox, and from those compile a ‘snippets’ post. Here, then, is the latest selection of news items…
Awards voting deadline extended
And an updated list of alternative votes. The Awards poll for 2019 went live towards the end of March, with a deadline for votes pencilled in as the end of May. However, due to the disappointing number of votes received, I have decided to leave it open until the end of this month.
Show report: Southwest 2020
I don’t think anyone can possibly disagree with me when I say that 2020, so far, has been an unusual year. Most of the world is in some form of lockdown due to the SARS-CoV-2 (novel coronavirus) pandemic, with movements beyond our homes and interactions with people beyond our own households at a minimum – which means (in a RISC OS context) shows and user group meetings aren’t taking place.

Show report: London 2019
The 2019 RISC OS London Show took place on Saturday, 26th October – and once again (speaking as an exhibitor) seemed to be a buzzing, exciting show with plenty for the visitor to see and experience. It was the 11th London Show, with the first having taken place on 3rd October, 2009, and there was a good mix of exhibitors including large well known RISC OS names and smaller home-based operators. ROUGOL goes mobile – 18th November
Well, not literally; the group is going nowhere! The next meeting of the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will take place on Monday, 18th November, and will be a group discussion about the options for using RISC OS on the move.
Show report: Wakefield 2019
Six months on from the show itself… that’s almost as long as the Long Gap between the Wakefield and London shows! Ahem. The place to be for discerning RISC OS users (and retro Acorn enthusiasts) on Saturday, 27th April, was Wakefield – more specifically, the Cedar Court Hotel in Calder Grove – because that was where the annual Wakefield Acorn and RISC OS Computer Show took place.
The 2019 London Show looms
Hang on, have I written the Southwest Show report yet? Ah, yes. What about Wakefield? Er… The countdown until the end of the Long Gap, when the RISC OS London Show takes place, has now ticked down to twenty days. It takes place on Saturday, 26th October at the St Giles Hotel, Feltham – so I hope everyone has their travel (and if necessary hotel) arrangements made, and that the show will be busy with plenty of visitors.

It was the dawn of the third age of mankind second venue for the RISC OS Southwest Show Since its inception, each and every Southwest Show until this year’s had been held at the Webbington Hotel in Somerset – a grand total of twenty one shows, with twenty years between the first, which took place on 7th February, 1998, and last year’s event, which took place on 24th February, 2018.
