30th October, 2021, marked the return to physical shows in the UK, when the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) hosted their customary October event at the St Giles Hotel in Feltham – the RISC OS London Show. DeskWatcher version 0.9 released
DeskWatcher is a commercial application released by Thomas Milius towards the end of 2020 that provides RISC OS with its very own system for sharing screens between multiple machines over a network, and an updated version is now available.

If you visited the recent London Show, you would have had a chance to play a couple of new games – both with a theme corresponding with the event taking place the day before Halloween, with one available to buy at the show. Organised as an online event last year because of the pandemic, the RISC OS London Show is returning to the physical world this year, and will take place on Saturday, 30th October, at its customary venue: St Giles Hotel,Feltham,TW14 9AD. The doors will be open to the public from 11:00am until 5:00pm, with an entry fee of £5.00 for adults – under-16s can get in for free.
Compare RISC OS distributions with ROUGOL – 20th September
Depending on which platform you use, there may be a number of different options available to you for RISC OS itself. As well as the standard distribution from RISC OS Open Ltd (ROOL), for example, there’s also the ePic option, also from ROOL, which – for a price – adds a great deal of bundled commercial software. Then there’s RISC OS Direct from RISC OS Developments Ltd, and if you’re opting for an emulated solution, what about older versions of RISC OS?
RISC OS Awards results 2020 now online
Open for approximately three months, the 2020 RISC OS Awards poll covering 2020 ran from April until June of this year, and received 141 valid votes. The results were calculated a little later than planned, but making a change from the normal approach of publishing them on Twitter and then the Awards website, this time around they were presented live at the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) meeting on 16th August.
Dozer screen saver reviewed
Introduction PackMan, the package management program for RISC OS computers, features an interesting screen saver program called !Dozer. Written by R.A Swetman it consists of a number of graphic savers that after a user-selected delay are automatically displayed on the screen. Having explored this program, I thought people might like know about it.

Escape from Exeria – a new-old game
Back in the mists of time, the first game released by Soft Rock Software was Escape from Exeria, a game in which the player navigates mazes to collect things while avoiding the bad guys – but unlike the most famous example of its kind, with an added puzzle element. Updated and re-released in the mid-1990s, the company has taken another look at it recently and given it a new lease of life.
