RISC OS Awards 2012/13 results

Is that a drum roll I hear? Voting closed a few days ago in the first annual awards poll to be run by RISCOSitory on the RISC OS Awards website, and the votes have now been calculated – on RISC OS, of course! In most cases, the winner achieved notably more votes than any others – and in some cases that amounted to more than half the votes. Going the other way, when it was close it couldn’t have been closer; in one case there was just one vote between…

It’s here at last: the London Show report 2013

Fanfares, please! The latest event in the RISC OS Calendar – the RISC OS London Show, 2013 – took place just over three weeks ago in its usual venue, the St Giles Hotel, Feltham. Organised by the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL), the show seemed from my point of view to be as busy and well attended as usual, though I understand the overall number of visitors was down on previous years by a small margin. Having said that, I spoke to a few people who I don’t remember…

Portsmouth’s first RISC OS show

Putting Portsmouth on the RISC OS map. The first ever RISC OS show in Portsmouth took place on 28th September, 2013- and it seems to have been a successful one, with both exhibitors and visitors reflecting positively about the event. The venue itself, the second floor of Innovation Warehouse Portsmouth, was comparatively small, offering a much more limited amount of space than other RISC OS shows, but the number of exhibitors filled the space very neatly, giving a good balance of things to see and people to talk to versus…

Disc duplicating software CloneDisc 1.01 now available

Dolly useful tool! Ben Avison of Piccolo Systems (and RISC OS Open Ltd) has released version 1.01 of CloneDisc, which he describes as “a general purpose tool for copying the entire contents of a disc,” and which “features full support for disc image files.” The software’s capabilities, explains Ben in his announcement at the beginning of August, fall into four major areas:

Wakefield 2013 show report

A day at the races RISC OS event. It’s approaching the end of April 2013, and this year’s Wakefield Show has come and gone. This year’s show was the eighteenth, and was once again held at the Cedar Court Hotel, very close to junction 39 of the M1 – the same venue at which it has been held for the last few years, and where the show was originally held all those years ago. As usual, I was there to demonstrate and discuss my products, and also – in theory…

RISC OS South West 2013: show report (updated)

At last! This year’s RISC OS South West show took place yesterday a couple of weeks ago, on 23rd February, 2013 – its customary late February Saturday. And I’m pleased to say that this year, I managed to find my way to the Webbington Hotel easily, without taking any wrong turns and without getting lost. I still managed to turn up late, though, and arrived after the show had already opened to the public. That is, however, fully in keeping with tradition – getting lost last year caused me to…

Midlands Show: report and photos

By the eighth day machine just got upset. A show report had not been posted yet… Just over a week ago, on July 7th, the Midsummer Midlands Mugshow 2012 took place. This is the smallest UK show of the RISC OS year, attracting the fewest exhibitors and visitors alike, and most exhibitors tend to time their big news and releases for the bigger shows, such as Wakefield and London. As usual, I set off from the RISCOSitory/Soft Rock Software top secret underground bunker (the entrance cunningly disguised as a ramshackle…

SD card support comes to RISC OS

Arrives in a flash. Something missing from RISC OS, which is increasingly apparent with support for them on modern devices on which the operating system can be run (or could be theoretically run if it was ported), is a filing system and driver for MMC/SD cards, allowing them to be accessed and used when inserted in the MicroSD card on hardware such as the BeagleBoard, in much the same way as any other storage media are accessed, like a hard or floppy disk or a CD or DVD ROM. MMC/SD…
