Wishing the ARM processor a happy 30th birthday
Today, 26th April, 2015 isn’t just the morning after this year’s Wakefield Show; it is also 30 years to the day since the very first ARM1 processor was produced, powered up – and worked! The story of the new processor goes back a little further than 26th April, 1985, and started when Acorn were looking for a suitable replacement for the MOS 6502 CPU, which at that point they were using in the BBC Microcomputer range.
Get in early, adopt an IGEPv5
A Fistful of Dollars allows you to run The Gauntlet with an early version! Although the new computer from CJE Micro’s is not yet complete, there are apparently (and unsurprisingly) people eager to get their hands on what is expected to be the fastest ever RISC OS computer to date – so Chris Evans says that they will be launching an Early Adopter Scheme at the Wakefield Show on Saturday, 25th April, 2015.

Precisely five days from now, it’ll all be over! Competition: Snappy name needed for snappy computer!
Entries on a StrongARM processor card postcard! At the recent Southwest Show, CJE Micro’s were showing off a prototype version of a new RISC OS computer based around an IGEPv5 (Cortex A15) processor, and Andrew Conroy told me that they were planning a competition to name the new computer. That competition has now been officially launched.
Pip-sized Pico now available
Pint-sized would be, like, MASSIVE! Last year the BASIC programming language celebrated its 50th birthday, having first appeared (as Dartmouth BASIC) in 1964, and in May RISC OS Open Ltd joined in the celebrations by releasing RISC OS Pico for the Raspberry Pi.
RiscOSM update and special offer
Bugs squashed – easier than giving them a map and sending them on their way. Sine Nomine Software have released a new version of RiscOSM, their mapping software for RISC OS. Version 1.21 of the application, which uses map data converted from OpenStreetMap, is now available to download as a free upgrade for existing users.
