Attend Dr Wimp’s Surgery with MUG
The Midlands User Group (MUG) meeting will take place online, via the Zoom video conferencing system, on Saturday, 4th February at 2:00pm. John McCartney will be taking the main stage for the meeting, to discuss Dr Wimp’s Surgery – a book published by the late Ray Favre that provided an introduction to programming the RISC OS desktop using the Dr Wimp BASIC library.
MiniTime clocks out as a module, becomes a regular application
Version 1.10 of MiniTime has been released by Fred Graute. The software provides a means to display the date and/or time in a small icon or window, with configuration options for its position on screen, the colours it uses, whether it appears above other windows, and more besides. Its goal is to provide quick and convenient access to a clock and calendar, without getting in the way.

Ovation Pro is a desktop publishing package written by David Pilling and originally sold by Beebug Ltd, and now by David himself, and one of the many features of the comprehensive application is an integrated script language.

While RISC OS may now be regarded as a small, niche operating system, with only a tiny fraction of the number of users that more mainstream platforms attract, it does still have a surprisingly vibrant community – so with that in mind, every once in a while I look through a selection of news groups, mailing lists, and forums, looking for announcements that haven’t found their way to me via the RISCOSitory news inbox, and from those compile a ‘snippets’ post. With 2019 drawing to a close at the end of today, to be immediately followed by a year with the official designation of 2020, it’s time to round up a selection of news that hasn’t been covered on RISCOSitory over the course of the year.
Transient becomes more robust with version 2.09
Fred Graute has released version 2.09 of Transient, a utility designed to present an easy to access, temporary storage location on your hard drive – but one that is, er, less transient than the RAM drive, as the files stored there don’t disappear when the computer is shut down. The program creates a new subdirectory each day, and anything saved within is kept until you choose to delete them – or, if you choose the Logan’s Run option, until they reach a certain age.
ToggleBD version 1.09 released
Fred Graute has released a new version of ToggleBD, a utility to raise the desktop backdrop to the front so that objects pinned to it are more easily accessible than by minimising windows and/or moving them around in order to find that pinned item. Using its iconbar icon, or a configurable hot-key combination, the backdrop can be both raised and lowered, so once you’ve found and used that pinned item, it’s quick and easy to return to your original task.
A duality of release for R-Comp’s Titanium-based products
Owners of R-Comp‘s TiMachine computers and subscribers to their Titanium Support Scheme can now benefit from two updates from the company. The first of these is an update to the Dual Monitor software, and the second is the release of the latest Super Pack – an update to the software provided with the computer or as part of the Support Scheme.
