This year’s RISC OS South West Show almost didn’t happen. Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd, the show’s organiser for the last few years, revealed recently that he normally waits for the Webbington Hotel, the show’s usual venue, to reduce the prices of the rooms in which the show can be held – and it seems even more recently (early January, according to Archive 23:4, p4), Paul said that he wouldn’t be organising another show. Richard Brown of Orpheus Internet soon stepped up, with Andrew Rawnsley and R-Comp joining him to…

South West Show goes ahead with new organisers
The first show of the RISC OS calendar is usually the South West Show, which traditionally takes place during February. Paul Middleton of RISC OS Ltd, who has been organising the show for the last few years, is reported in Archive Magazine issue 23:3 to have told Jim Nagel, the editor, that “he usually learns a date at the last minute when the hotel offers special deals”. However, even last year’s show, which was held later than usual, in March, was officially announced towards the end of November 2010, and…
Calibre 3.23 released
Calibre is a very comprehensive application for designing and printing calendars of all shapes, sizes and types, written by the late Ray Favre using Dr Wimp, his utility and function library designed to make it much easier to write fully multi-tasking RISC OS applications in BBC BASIC. The last “official” version of Calibre, as found on Ray’s website (along with manuals and source code), is version 3.21, but Chris Johnson has made some changes, and is able to make available an updated version 3.23, which includes the following changes:
First Raspberry Pis to go under the hammer
I mentioned in my report of the London Show, earlier this year, that the Raspberry Pi was expected to go on sale by the end of this year, and that a limited number would be auctioned on eBay at around the same time. Unfortunately, the first of these two events has had to be postponed, but the auctions are going ahead, starting tonight. Two of the ten numbered beta Raspberry Pis will be put on eBay each day, starting with numbers #10 and #09 tonight from around 10pm (GMT), continuing…
Voting now open for the RISCOScode Awards 2011
Something lacking from the tail end of last year was any kind of awards poll on any of the RISC OS news and information websites. Until its switch from active publishing to ‘archive’ mode, Drobe traditionally held an awards poll, and then The Icon Bar picked up the baton – until last year. This year, RISCOScode has taken on the task.
Snippets – 24th December 2011
Version 1.01 of Kevin Wells’ Simon Clone, Kevmon, is now available. An new ‘expert’ level has been added in this version, featuring eight coloured lights along with the usual four in the normal game. According to Jeff Dogget, Fat32FS, the filing system for USB mass storage devices on the IYONIX and BeagleBoard based computers, is now at version 1.39. This release fixes a bug with drives greater than 256GB. In My Diary, the Organizer-like program by Kevin Edwards for Windows, Mac and Linux, is now able to use Organizer’s Journal…
The better late than never London Show 2011 report
In the run up to the London Show on October 29th, and in the days since, things have been somewhat hectic for me, so I’ve only now had a chance to properly go through my pictures – which, as tradition now dictates, are not very good. I’ve selected a few and edited them into something usable, though, and present them below with my comments.
RISC OS London Show 2011 – Preview
The RISC OS London Show 2011 is finally upon us. In the morning, I will be making my way down to the hall at the St Giles Hotel, Feltham, where I’ve already set up my stand, ready for when the doors are open to the public at 11am. The line up for this year’s show includes plenty of regular faces as well as a few less regular (and perhaps first time) exhibitors, and some special treats – so let’s get straight down to business and look at who and what…
Drag ‘n Drop ceases publication
With all but one of the subscription based RISC OS magazines having ceased publication, back in 2009 Paul Stewart decided to launch a new magazine – Drag ‘n Drop – and, avoiding the pressure and commitment brought about by taking subscriptions, each issue of the magazine was published online as a PDF file which users could download after purchasing. Two years and two volumes of four issues later, it appears from comments on the Drag ‘n Drop website that Paul has decided to cease publication.
PipeDream 4.50/23 now free to download
Gerald Fitton of Abacus Training has announced via the Archive-on-Line mailing list that he has now received permission from Colton Software “to make a version of PipeDream 4.50/23 available as Freeware.” In his message to the list, Gerald explains his long standing history with Colton Software and PipeDream, which started in (or around) 1988, soon after the Acorn Archimedes first appeared. Gerald and his wife, Jill, were “invited by Colton Software to create a support service for their newly developed, integrated word-processor spread-sheet Program called PipeDream” – which they did…
